Intent

At Raynsford Academy, our intent is to deliver a high-quality art and design curriculum that inspires, engages and challenges all children. Through a carefully planned and sequenced curriculum, we aim to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to experiment, invent, and create their own works of art, craft and design. As children progress, they develop the ability to think critically, reflect purposefully, and gain a deeper understanding of the contribution art and design make to culture and creativity.

Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive and ambitious for all learners, from Reception to Year 6 and ensures that pupils experience a broad and balanced range of artistic disciplines and that progression is clear, coherent, and purposeful.

Our art and design curriculum:

  • Develops children’s proficiency in a variety of artistic skills, techniques, and media, enabling them to communicate ideas effectively and creatively.
  • Supports the development of ideas and understanding of the creative process through structured exploration, reflection, and refinement.
  • Promotes appreciation of the work of significant artists, designers, and craftspeople so children make connections between their own work and that of others.
  • Fosters the ability to evaluate and analyse creative works, strengthening children’s’ critical thinking and reflective skills.
  • Encourages independence, ownership, and pride through the use of sketchbooks as a tool for recording, developing, and evaluating their ideas over time.

All children complete one art project and one design and technology project each half term. The curriculum is carefully structured to ensure comprehensive coverage of key artistic skills and media, so that by the end of each key stage, children can confidently understand, apply, and refine the techniques they have been taught and can revisit and build upon prior learning.

Core strands include:

  • Painting
  • Drawing
  • Craft and Design
  • Cooking and Nutrition
  • Textiles
  • Structures and Mechanisms

This approach ensures that children consolidate prior knowledge, deepen their understanding, and apply skills with increasing precision and creativity. By doing so, they develop as reflective, confident, and independent artists and designers who are well prepared for the next stage of their education.
